Vikram Misri, the next foreign secretary, is a diplomat from Kashmir who has previously worked at the Prime Minister's office and the Ministry of External Affairs.

Previously, Vikram Misri was India's ambassador to China.

The government declared on Friday that Vikram Misri, the deputy national security adviser, will succeed Vinay Kwatra as the new foreign secretary. The Personnel Ministry's decision, released on Friday, stated: "The Appointments Committee of the Cabinet has approved the appointment of Misri, Deputy NSA in the National Security Council Secretariat, to the post of Foreign Secretary with effect from July 15."

It also gave its approval to shorten Misri's term as deputy NSA.

The next envoy to the US, however, is anticipated to be Vinay Kwatra. He received a six-month extension to his term of service in March 2024.

Who is Vikram Misri ?

Vikram Misri, an Indian Foreign Service (IFS) officer from the 1989 batch, has worked as a private secretary to three prime ministers: Manmohan Singh, Inder Kumar Gujral, and Narendra Modi.

The recent foreign secretary was renowned for his proficiency in China. During the Galwan skirmishes, from January 2019 until December 2021, he served as ambassador in Beijing for the last time. Experts believe that Vikram Misri is a good fit for the position of foreign secretary, as stated by Hindustan Times. This is a result of his critical assessment of China, which presents India with its main foreign policy obstacle.

The diplomat from Kashmir

On November 7, 1964, Vikram Misri was born in Srinagar. After completing his studies in history at Hindu College, University of Delhi, he went on to XLRI, Jamshedpur, to obtain an MBA.

In January 2022, Misri started working at the National Security Council Secretariat, where NSA Ajit Doval was his boss. 

As deputy NSA, who will take Vikram Misri's place?

According to Hindustan Times, Jawed Ashraf, India's ambassador to France, is most likely to succeed Vikram Misri at the National Security Council Secretariat. Under both Manmohan Singh and Narendra Modi, Ashraf held the position of joint secretary in the Prime Minister's Office in the past.
