Mumbai Weather Update: IMD Downgrades Alert, Light Rainfall Expected Today
The Indian Meteorological Department (IMD) has scaled down its weather warning for Mumbai and surrounding areas, bringing some relief to residents. Earlier this week, an orange alert was issued, signaling heavy to very heavy rainfall. However, the alert has now been toned down to a yellow alert, indicating light to moderate rainfall with scattered thunderstorms.
What’s Happening with Mumbai’s Weather?
Meteorologists explain that the weather system responsible for the earlier warnings remains too far south to bring significant rainfall to Mumbai at this time. As a result, Mumbai, Palghar, Thane, and Raigad are expected to experience lighter rains accompanied by gusty winds, rather than the heavy downpour initially forecasted.
- Rainfall forecast: Light to moderate showers with scattered thunderstorms.
- Winds: Gusty winds expected, adding to the weather activity.
- Humidity: High humidity levels continue, with Colaba reporting 94% and Santacruz 88%.
Current Conditions and Monsoon Outlook
As of Friday morning, a well-marked low-pressure area persists over the east-central Arabian Sea, near the south Konkan coast. This system may intensify into a depression within the next 24 hours, but its effects on Mumbai will remain limited for now.
In terms of rainfall data:
- Southern Mumbai recorded 6.1 mm of rain on Friday.
- Between March 1 and May 23, Colaba logged 124 mm of rainfall, significantly above the normal by 115 mm.
- Santacruz measured 137.3 mm, exceeding the usual by 126 mm.
The official monsoon onset for Mumbai is expected on June 11, according to the Times of India.
Weather Update for Goa
The IMD also forecasts widespread light to moderate rainfall for Goa, coupled with thunderstorms, lightning, and strong winds blowing at speeds of 40-50 kmph. Coastal residents should stay alert for changing weather conditions.
Summary
- IMD downgrades Mumbai’s weather alert from orange to yellow.
- Light to moderate rain with scattered thunderstorms expected.
- High humidity continues, but heavy rainfall is unlikely today.
- Monsoon expected to officially begin on June 11.
- Similar weather conditions predicted for Goa with thunderstorms and strong winds.
