News on the rape-murder case of a doctor in Kolkata: On Friday, August 16, political demonstrations and rallies are expected in Kolkata. The women's wing of the BJP is planning a candlelight march to the residence of West Bengal chief minister Mamata Banerjee, where they will demand her resignation over the rape and killing of a trainee woman doctor as well as vandalism at RG Kar Medical College and Hospital.

A 12-hour general strike in West Bengal on August 16 has also been called by the Socialist Unity Centre of India (Communist), which is protesting the mob's vandalism at RG Kar Medical College and Hospital and calling for the arrest of everyone responsible for the rape and killing of a female post-graduate trainee doctor in the medical establishment.

On August 17, Mamata Banerjee, the chief minister of West Bengal, is also scheduled to protest and call for the death penalty to be imposed on the defendants in the rape-murder case involving the trainee doctor.

In order to seek justice for the trainee doctor who was raped and killed at the city's RG Kar College and Hospital in Kolkata, Mamata Banerjee has said that she will begin a demonstration. The chief minister further requested that "ensure justice within next Sunday" be done by the Central Bureau of Investigation, which assumed control of the investigation from the Kolkata Police.

On Thursday, the Kolkata Metro Railway said that it will operate regularly on August 16, the day the Socialist Unity Centre of India (Communist) called for a 12-hour national strike.

A 24-hour statewide shutdown of non-emergency services will begin at 6 a.m. on August 17 as part of the Indian Medical Association's (IMA) protest over the event and the ensuing damage at the RG Kar hospital early on Thursday.

A doctor's rape-murder case in Kolkata:

  • The Socialist Unity Centre of India (Communist) has demanded the arrest of everyone connected to the rape and killing of a female post-graduate trainee doctor in the medical establishment, and has called for a 12-hour general strike in West Bengal on August 16 in protest of the mob's vandalism at RG Kar Medical College and Hospital.
  • On Friday night, the Bharatiya Janata Party Mahila Morcha will hold a silent candlelight march against the rape and murder of the woman doctor in all of West Bengal's district headquarters.
  • In further protest of the destruction at RG Kar Medical College and Hospital, the Jadavpur University Teachers' Association has also called for a one-day work stoppage on Friday. The group sought justice for the victim's family in a statement, denouncing any attempt to hide evidence connected to the postgraduate trainee doctor's murder and rape.
  • On Friday at 2:00 pm, the Resident Doctors' Associations (RDAs) in Delhi, the National Capital, will embark on a unified protest march from Nirman Bhavan. The Delhi Medical Association (DMA) agreed to stage a candle march at India Gate on Friday at 5 p.m. after holding an emergency meeting to examine the rape-murder tragedy on Thursday.
  • Routine OPDs and elective procedures would not be performed during those 24 hours, according to an official statement from IMA, although other necessary treatments will still be provided.
  • A protest over the August 16 incident in Mumbai's Azad Maidan was also scheduled by the Maharashtra Association of Resident Doctors, or MARD.
  • In the meantime, protesting physicians at RG Kar Medical College and Hospital have allied themselves with members of the Bengali film and television industry.
  • The medical community throughout the country staged protests and strikes on August 9 in response to the alleged rape and murder of a postgraduate trainee doctor at RG Kar Medical College in Kolkata.
  • Massive demonstrations were sparked after the occurrence. A mob vandalized the RG Kar hospital's protest area and hospital complex on Wednesday, causing security staff to disperse the throng.
