Copa America, Argentina vs Colombia

Argentina defeats Colombia at the Copa America, thrilling the crowd despite Lionel Messi's injury.

After defeating Colombia 1-0 on Monday, Argentina is the reigning Copa América winner once more.

Argentina's triumph ends a tie with Uruguay for the most Copa América championships ever won, giving them their 16th Copa América final victory.

The two teams entered extra time with no score after an entertaining Copa América final that lasted 90 minutes plus four minutes of stoppage time. After a tiresome 30-minute match, Argentina finally took the lead in the 111th minute thanks to a goal from Lautaro Martínez, his fifth of the competition.

Argentina's win was bittersweet because they had to play the majority of the game without Lionel Messi, their national star for the past 20 years. Messi was forced to watch the rest of the game from the sidelines after sustaining an injury in the 64th minute.

But Argentina had enough to win what might have been Messi's final Copa América game even without the superstar.

Following the victory, supporters gave Martínez and Argentina high marks for persevering against fatigue to win the Copa América final for the second time in a row.

Even if Argentina's performance in the championship game wasn't the best of the competition, it delivered when it needed most and now has a second trophy to show for it.

Argentina has had a successful run of late in its international career, having won the World Cup in 2022, the Copa América in 2021, and now another Copa América. It will now start getting ready for the 2026 World Cup defense.
